Logitech MX Revolution mouse dissected
It's a little painful and hideous to watch, but some of us are still a little curious as to just how Logitech managed to fit those dozens of moving parts (and a few motors) in their new Revolution mice to give that wheel its free-spinning abilities. We're not firm believers in animal testing 'round these parts, but this mouse was just begging to be opened up for the betterment of human knowledge.

How to open it?
After only 6 months, the left button of my MX Revolution doesn't work properly anymore. I want to try to fix it before buying another (cheaper) one. How can I open the mouse without breaking it?
Majk @ May 5th 2008 1:19PM
There are 5 Screws below the mice "foots" ( glued low friction foots ;) )

. . I'm using one MX Revolution for some time now (Windows -- no drivers and no proprietary software -- and Linux) and last week the "free spin" is just no free spinning anymore. Altough the "click-spin" goes away, something is breaking the movement and it's stopping too fast. I dropped it a lot of times and managed to get a small black pin out of it (lifting the button a little) after hearing the sound of the thing shaking inside the mouse. I'm pretty sure that ridiculously small pin can't make the whole thing stop working, so maybe it's just a matter of replacing the oil or something?

thats pretty cool im guessing its bluetooth... and costs a bit. i would take it... shit i want it i might have to get one i mean you can scroll through 100 pagers in like a second
Zadillo @ Sep 4th 2006 1:31AM
I don't think it is bluetooth actually (both the MX and the portable VX come with tiny little USB receivers that you hook up to your computer). Would be kind of cool for them to make a bluetooth version though.
Matt @ Sep 4th 2006 1:34AM
yeah id rather have a bluetooth model than the usb reciver but either way its still awesome
John @ Sep 4th 2006 2:30AM
This is quite an achievement. I want one. Now!!

That picture gave me the idea to make two pictures of an open and closed device and just photoshop the cut-out.

I bought the revolution MX mouse and i love it. Only problem is when you have logitechs software running you lose the ability to middle click. I use middle click to open hyperlink in new tab. If i close the logitech software it works fine. Kicker is that if i don't run the software on startup, other things do not work well. So i have it run on startup than exit the program before browsing the web. Other than that i love the mouse.

I replaced both of my Apple® Mighty Mice with a Logitech VX Revolution for my MacBook Pro 17"
and a Logitech MX Revolution for my iMac 24" Intel
The Mouse Software issue bugs me to so I bought SteerMouse which can be used with a Mouse
but I use it with both of my Logitechs lets you control what your mouse does and you can
then use all the buttons and sliders etc.
Galley @ Sep 4th 2006 10:04AM
Can't you map the middle-click function to the search button?
Anyway, CompUSA has a 20% off coupon in this week's ad that you can use on the Revolution.
Jack Smith @ Sep 4th 2006 12:28PM
RE not being able to middle click. In the setpoint software (I presume this is what it uses). Select the mouse then the middle mouse button, then change it's function to 'middle mouse button'.
Kevin @ Sep 5th 2006 10:55AM
That's a Logitech VX not MX model!
alan @ Sep 4th 2006 1:19PM
Unfortunately you cannot map the scroll wheel at all. You can map some of the other buttons for left or right click but amazingly no middle click. You can do a keystroke assignment for the keys so i may be able to do it that way but not with the wheel. The SetPoint software is ok but not as versatile as i would expect....
Internet Friend @ Sep 4th 2006 4:51PM
You can make the middle mouse button act as middle click, but it requires you to disable the Manual Shift function for the application you want to middle click in (or disable it alltogether).
Go to the Scroll Wheel options in SetPoint, click on "Manage Programs" and add the program you want. Select the program from the drop down box, then uncheck "Allow Manual Shifting between modes". Go back to the mouse button options, select the program from the dropdown box there, and assign the mousewheel to Other: Middle Click. Install uberoptions and you can assign it to anything you want.
The big letdown is that you cannot assign the up/down/click functions on the side "wheel" without losing much of the mouse wheel functionality.

Unfortunately you cannot map the scroll wheel at all.
What about using uberoptions or logigamer software? These packages may need to be updated for the new Logi-mice, but they may provide an option for middle-click...
Personally, I'm waiting for the keyboard/mouse combo that will (likely?) bundle the MX Revolution.
dtrwos @ Sep 5th 2006 1:07AM
This mouse doesnt have a middle click.. other than setpoint can maange the middle click just fine - i use it on all my other mice... you can always map another button to "middle mouse" it only has like 100 diffrent buttons.
alex @ Sep 5th 2006 11:48PM
i got the mouse today. its nice. very big issue. if you have a ratpad the on/off button has a raised part. it is rased more then the pads on the mouse so its rocks on the button. i just shaved it down with a razor but still. come on.

===============================
THe VX & MX mice use RF technology with auto power save built in. RF technology has virtually no lag unlike Bluetooth and performs to a higher standard with auto frequency changing to avoid cross talk with another unit.
The only concern for lefties & righties is the molded case & comfort.
Battery life is v. good.

Very disappointing that there's no bluetooth version of this mouse, all bluetooth mice seem to have disappeared from logitech's product listings! Why do I need to mess with an additional ugly dongle in my USB slot when my notebook (like almost every other modern machine) already has a built-in bluetooth support? I also prefer to keep my usb slots free for better purposes. I'm aware of bluetooth disadvantages, however it's worth to me not having another peripheral plugged in my notebook. Am I the only consumer who thinks this way or am I an insignificant minority, not worth for Logitech to make an effort in this direction?
Bluetooth Hater @ Nov 27th 2006 9:21PM
i've used some bluetooth mice from Microsoft and Logitech before, i really did not want to have an extra part to carry with, that's why i always preferred a BT mouse but BT protocol made me really really sick when i open my laptop and try to use my mouse, maybe thousands of time i tried to make my computer connect to my mouse manually from BT config. That's why i think MS and Logitech produces no more BT mice. And also i strictly do not recommend you to have one if you find any... P.S. I am using now MS IntelliBluetooth Mouse and just ordered from the mouse above:) bye bye my old beatiful headache...
